Host in Ireland Data Hosting Industry Report Indicates Continuing Momentum in Data Centre Sector

Update Reveals More Than €1 Billion of New Irish Data Centre Investments Were Announced in 2018 Q2

DUBLIN – 26 July 2018 Host in Ireland, a strategic global initiative created to increase awareness of the benefits of hosting digital assets in Ireland, and winner of the Datacloud Europe 2016 award for Innovative Data Center Location, announces the release of its report, “Ireland’s Data Hosting Industry 2018 Q2 Update.”  According to the report, momentum in investment in Ireland’s data centre industry continues to grow with more than €1 billion of new projects announced over the past three months. The research study, created by Host in Ireland in collaboration with Bitpower, builds on the baseline set out in the 2017 report, addressing the sustainability of the Irish data industry.

With Apple’s decision not to progress with its €850 million data centre investment in Athenry, County Galway, Ireland, there was concern that the impact of the decision would affect Ireland’s ability to attract continued investment in data centres. However, the 2018 Q2 Update report indicates that 10 new data halls were announced between April and June 2018, and that in total more than €1 billion will be spent in the construction and operation of the facilities with an initial €500m being spent over the next three years. Additionally, eight new data centres are in construction with a further 12 having received planning permission. Moreover, data centres in Ireland have employed 5,700 people in full-time positions between construction and operational roles while generating €1.6 billion direct and €2.6 billion in indirect economic benefits to Ireland since 2010.

“Ireland’s contribution to the global data centre industry continues to grow with demand increasing for Irish companies, skills and expertise to lead projects across the U.S., Europe and Asia cementing our position as a global industry player,” explains Garry Connolly, Founder and CEO, Host in Ireland.  “As the Ireland Data Hosting 2018 Q2 report shows, Ireland remains attractive as a country at the forefront of an industry that is building modern digital infrastructure, and data hosting has evolved to become one of the pillars for attracting foreign direct investment into the country.”

“Ireland, Data’s Gateway to Europe” Event to Converge Leading Authorities on EU-US Data Protection

By: Garry Connolly, President & Founder of Host in Ireland Secure data transmission is critical when hosting digital assets abroad, especially in a time when data breaches run rampant and threats grow more sophisticated with each passing day. Of equal importance is the notion of corporations respecting individuals’ right to privacy and protecting their personal data as information is transferred from country to country. To regulate the way that U.S. companies exported and handled the personal data of European citizens, the United States Department of Commerce and the European Union established the Safe Harbor policy agreement in November 2000. However, due to concerns surrounding American government authorities gaining access to Europeans’ online information, it was deemed invalid by the European Court of Justice in its ruling on October 6, 2015. As a response to the invalidation of the Safe Harbor Framework, the European Commission and United States recently agreed upon the EU-US Privacy Shield, a new framework for transatlantic data transmission. This change will directly affect many companies hosting internationally, and as the Privacy Shield remains under analysis by the European Commission’s Article 29 Working party, data transfer has become somewhat of an intricate process. Until the EU completes its analysis, related complaints are being dealt with on a case-by-case basis and outside transfer mechanisms, such as Standard Contractual Clauses and Binding Corporate Rules, are being utilized in the interim to transfer data to the U.S. Though international data protection grows increasingly complex, Ireland is well- prepared to provide companies with the necessary resources to maintain compliance and succeed in their international hosting endeavors. As a superior hosting location, Ireland attracts companies of all sizes and markets thanks to its representation of the five fundamental principles of digital asset hosting: Policy, Pedigree, People, Power and Pipes, or the 5 Ps. With the recent uncertainty surrounding EU-US data protection, understanding the nuances of compliance is critical to remaining competitive, and Host in Ireland has made it their mission to help companies navigate these shifting waters by converging some of the leading authorities in the field to address the topic at its “Ireland, Data’s Gateway to Europe” event. Featuring a special presentation by Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner, Helen Dixon, this marquee event, taking place at the Embassy of Ireland in Washington D.C. on April 6, 2016 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm, will examine the changing data protection landscape throughout Europe as well as EU-US Safe Harbor framework and EU-US Privacy Shield updates. In addition to Ms. Dixon, additional featured speakers at “Ireland, Data’s Gateway to Europe” include Emmanuel Dowdall, Executive VP/Director North America at IDA Ireland, Buddy Rizer, Executive Director of Loudoun County’s Department of Economic Development and Garry Connolly, President and Founder of Host in Ireland. If you would like to register for this event free of charge, please contact marketing@hostinireland.com. Host in Ireland Announces “Ireland, Data’s Gateway to Europe” Event, Featuring Helen Dixon, Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner

The April 6, 2016 Event Will Examine Europe’s Changing Data Protection Landscape, and EU-US Safe Harbor Principles

HII-New LogoDUBLIN, IRELAND – March 22, 2016 Host in Ireland, a strategic global initiative created to increase awareness of the benefits of hosting digital assets in Ireland, today announces a marquee event taking place at the Embassy of Ireland in Washington D.C., “Ireland, Data’s Gateway to Europe” on April 6, 2016 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. The event will feature a special presentation by Helen Dixon, Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner, along with informative presentations by industry leaders on the changing data protection landscape in Europe as well as EU-US Safe Harbor framework and EU-US Privacy Shield updates.

In addition to Commissioner Dixon, featured speakers include, Emmanuel Dowdall, Executive VP/Director North America at IDA Ireland, Buddy Rizer, Executive Director of Loudoun County’s Department of Economic Development, as well as Garry Connolly, President and Founder of Host in Ireland, who will present the “5 Ps” of digital asset hosting – Policies, Pedigree, People, Power and Pipes.

With the recent invalidation of the Safe Harbor framework, the European Commission and the United States have agreed upon a new framework for transatlantic data flows: the EU-US Privacy Shield. Because the EU-US Privacy Shield is still undergoing analysis by the European Commission’s Article 29 Working Party, complaints related to the invalidated Safe Harbor decision are being dealt with on a case-by-case basis and transfer mechanisms, such as Standard Contractual Clauses and Binding Corporate Rules, may be used to transfer data to the U.S. until the Article 29 Working Party completes its assessment. For companies, these changes will require mechanisms to keep better track of data flows from the respect of both employee and corporate customer data. Host in Ireland is already one step ahead of the curve in helping companies navigate the rapidly shifting terrain of data transfer compliance, aided by its longtime commitment to the 5 Ps of digital asset hosting. These key elements provide a structured foundation for hosting that supports Ireland’s position as a superior hosting location and attracts companies of all sizes and markets to the country.

“With the complexity and uncertainty surrounding EU-US data protection, it’s paramount that companies understand the nuances of compliance in order to remain competitive, and our panel represents some of the leading authorities in the field to address the current state of data protection in Europe,” states Garry Connolly, President and Founder of Host in Ireland. “Furthermore, through its steadfast integration of the 5 Ps, Ireland’s integrity in safely, securely, and effectively meeting hosting needs remains unparalleled. The upcoming event in Washington will offer attendees the opportunity to hear firsthand the crucial role Ireland’s commitment to these five key elements plays in ensuring the fidelity of digital assets in such a changeable time for EU-US data protection.”
