Host in Ireland Announces Update to Its Report Demonstrating the Sustainability of the Irish Data Industry

Update Examines Growth of Renewable Energies to Further Support the Data Centre Industry

DUBLIN – 21 November 2018 Host in Ireland, a strategic global initiative created to increase awareness of the benefits of hosting digital assets in Ireland today announces the release of its report, “Ireland’s Data Hosting Industry 2018 Q3 Update.”  The report in collaboration with Bitpower, highlights the continued growth of the data centre industry in Ireland as well as outlining their continued prioritization of green energy.

Supplemental to previous updates for their “Ireland’s Data Hosting Industry 2018 Update” series, this report performs an analysis of the evolution of energy efficiency in data centres as well as the continued growth of these facilities in the market. The report explores the opening of several new and large facilities in Ireland, most notably by Facebook in Clonee, which plans to be fully sustained by renewable energy. Other large companies with presence in Ireland include Google, Microsoft and Amazon, which have committed to or already secured 100 percent renewable resources for their Ireland-based locations. Furthermore, the report outlines the completion of new Hyperscale and Build to Suit facilities in the third quarter of 2018 (Q3).

“As we move towards 2018’s close, it’s a great time to look over the industry’s progress. With a total of 48 data centres boasting 540 megawatts of grid-connected power capacity, it’s crucial that renewable energies move to support these demands, which continue to increase,” states Garry Connolly, Founder and CEO, Host in Ireland. “With this updated report, we hope to provide an overview of Ireland’s success in these energy and efficiency considerations, as well as introduce investors and clients to the technologies that will support our future.”

In 2017, 29 percent of Ireland’s grid electricity was generated from renewable resources. By 2020, the country aims to increase that number up to 40 percent, while the goal for 2030 sits at 70 percent. The report reveals that tools like virtualisation, power usage effectiveness (PuE) Metric benchmarks and hot aisle containment designs allow for more efficient data centre operations. Going beyond these established methods, new energy efficient methodologies are being implemented to further augment and ensure data centre progress. The Excellence in Energy Efficient Design (EXEED) certified program, a support scheme developed by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI),  includes grant and capital supports to bolster new designs and systematic technology adoptions.

Host in Ireland Data Hosting Industry Report Indicates Continuing Momentum in Data Centre Sector

Update Reveals More Than €1 Billion of New Irish Data Centre Investments Were Announced in 2018 Q2

DUBLIN – 26 July 2018 Host in Ireland, a strategic global initiative created to increase awareness of the benefits of hosting digital assets in Ireland, and winner of the Datacloud Europe 2016 award for Innovative Data Center Location, announces the release of its report, “Ireland’s Data Hosting Industry 2018 Q2 Update.”  According to the report, momentum in investment in Ireland’s data centre industry continues to grow with more than €1 billion of new projects announced over the past three months. The research study, created by Host in Ireland in collaboration with Bitpower, builds on the baseline set out in the 2017 report, addressing the sustainability of the Irish data industry.

With Apple’s decision not to progress with its €850 million data centre investment in Athenry, County Galway, Ireland, there was concern that the impact of the decision would affect Ireland’s ability to attract continued investment in data centres. However, the 2018 Q2 Update report indicates that 10 new data halls were announced between April and June 2018, and that in total more than €1 billion will be spent in the construction and operation of the facilities with an initial €500m being spent over the next three years. Additionally, eight new data centres are in construction with a further 12 having received planning permission. Moreover, data centres in Ireland have employed 5,700 people in full-time positions between construction and operational roles while generating €1.6 billion direct and €2.6 billion in indirect economic benefits to Ireland since 2010.

“Ireland’s contribution to the global data centre industry continues to grow with demand increasing for Irish companies, skills and expertise to lead projects across the U.S., Europe and Asia cementing our position as a global industry player,” explains Garry Connolly, Founder and CEO, Host in Ireland.  “As the Ireland Data Hosting 2018 Q2 report shows, Ireland remains attractive as a country at the forefront of an industry that is building modern digital infrastructure, and data hosting has evolved to become one of the pillars for attracting foreign direct investment into the country.”

Host in Ireland Announces Update to Its Report Demonstrating the Sustainability of the Irish Data Industry

Update Reinforces How Irish Data Centres Have Evolved to Become an Industry of Substance

Host In Ireland LogoDUBLIN – 10 April 2018 Host in Ireland, a strategic global initiative created to increase awareness of the benefits of hosting digital assets in Ireland, and winner of the Datacloud Europe 2016 award for Innovative Data Center Location, today announces the release of a new update to its report, “Ireland’s Data Hosting Industry 2018 Q1 Update.”  The research study, created in collaboration with Bitpower, builds on the baseline set out in its recent 2017 report addressing the sustainability of the Irish data industry.

Updating existing baseline statistics and information, the report examines the opportunities and risks associated with the digital asset hosting industry in Ireland.  With a thriving digital economy, the country serves as home to some of the biggest names in the tech industry, exporting $71 billion of ICT services in 2016 alone.  This new update reveals that of the four types of existing data centres in Ireland, including hyperscale, colocation wholesale, colocation and private, hyperscale facilities dominate the market with 74 percent of the total MW capacity, which has grown from 420 to 480 in the first quarter of 2018.  In addition, the report predicts that just over €1.1 billion will be invested in Irish data centre construction in 2018, reaching cumulative investment of €9 billion by 2021.

“By providing the industry with the most timely and accurate update on data centre activity throughout Ireland, we are helping to materialize the goal of creating a “Connected Planet,” enabling industry stakeholders to access the necessary information to continue investing in the Irish digital economy,” explains David McAuley, Founder and CEO, Bitpower, and Host in Ireland Advisory Council member.  “We believe this baseline will act as a useful reference for policymakers as Ireland continues its leadership in the creation, retention and exportation of digital assets, products and services.”
