Host in Ireland Announces Update to Its Report Demonstrating the Sustainability of the Irish Data Industry

Update Reinforces How Irish Data Centres Have Evolved to Become an Industry of Substance

Host In Ireland LogoDUBLIN – 10 April 2018 Host in Ireland, a strategic global initiative created to increase awareness of the benefits of hosting digital assets in Ireland, and winner of the Datacloud Europe 2016 award for Innovative Data Center Location, today announces the release of a new update to its report, “Ireland’s Data Hosting Industry 2018 Q1 Update.”  The research study, created in collaboration with Bitpower, builds on the baseline set out in its recent 2017 report addressing the sustainability of the Irish data industry.

Updating existing baseline statistics and information, the report examines the opportunities and risks associated with the digital asset hosting industry in Ireland.  With a thriving digital economy, the country serves as home to some of the biggest names in the tech industry, exporting $71 billion of ICT services in 2016 alone.  This new update reveals that of the four types of existing data centres in Ireland, including hyperscale, colocation wholesale, colocation and private, hyperscale facilities dominate the market with 74 percent of the total MW capacity, which has grown from 420 to 480 in the first quarter of 2018.  In addition, the report predicts that just over €1.1 billion will be invested in Irish data centre construction in 2018, reaching cumulative investment of €9 billion by 2021.

“By providing the industry with the most timely and accurate update on data centre activity throughout Ireland, we are helping to materialize the goal of creating a “Connected Planet,” enabling industry stakeholders to access the necessary information to continue investing in the Irish digital economy,” explains David McAuley, Founder and CEO, Bitpower, and Host in Ireland Advisory Council member.  “We believe this baseline will act as a useful reference for policymakers as Ireland continues its leadership in the creation, retention and exportation of digital assets, products and services.”

Circular Data Solutions Joins Host in Ireland as a Partner for 2018

Host in Ireland Welcomes Mike Wegwermer, Co-Founder and Director of Circular Data Solutions, to Its Executive Committee

DUBLIN – 13 March, 2018 Host in Ireland, a strategic global initiative created to increase awareness of the benefits of hosting digital assets in Ireland, and winner of the Datacloud Europe 2016 award for Innovative Data Center Location, today announces that Circular Data Solutions will be a strategic partner in 2018.  In addition, Mike Wegwermer, Co-Founder and Director of Circular Data Solutions, will join the Host in Ireland Executive Committee.

“We are pleased to welcome Circular Data Solutions as a Host in Ireland partner,” comments Garry Connolly, Founder and President of Host in Ireland.  “We also welcome Mike Wegwermer to our Executive Committee.  With the General Data Protection Regulation coming into force this May, Mike’s experience in providing services that enable global data centre operators, financial and healthcare institutions, and government agencies to manage and protect personal data is an immediate asset to one of the initiative’s chief concerns.”

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will replace the existing data protection framework under the EU Data Protection Directive.  As a regulation, it will not generally require transposition into Irish law, so organisations involved in data processing of any sort need to be aware of the obligations it imposes. The GDPR emphasises transparency, security and accountability by data controllers, while at the same time standardising and strengthening the right of European citizens to data privacy.

Based in Belfast, Circular Data Solutions, the EMEA distribution partner of SITES, is a division of Security Engineered Machinery Inc. (SEM). Circular Data Solutions is a manufacturer of destruction equipment for ‘end-of-life’ data storage devices, including enterprise hard drives, solid state drives, and all other types of magnetic and digital storage media.  With the advent of the GDPR, Circular Data Solutions’ data destruction equipment, and technical and maintenance support services are projected to see increasingly high demand across the EU region.

“Becoming a Host in Ireland partner has enabled us to meet and collaborate with such a diverse cross-section and well-informed group of industry leaders,” states Mike Wegwermer, Director of Circular Data Solutions.  “Our goal is to help operators and infrastructure suppliers to data centres think about and plan data destruction solutions as an integral requirement. You can easily, and more cost-effectively remove a potentially damaging data security risk by destroying end-of-life data in-house.”

In addition to spearheading Host in Ireland, Mr. Connolly is Co-Chair of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Awareness Coalition, a not-for-profit initiative designed to raise awareness of the data privacy obligations for companies resulting from the implementation of the GDPR.  As EU directives on managing data security transitions into law as the GDPR, Mr. Wegwermer shares Host in Ireland’s and the GDPR Awareness Coalition’s position that every organisation generating or manipulating personal data records, regardless of location, now needs to closely review their data security processes.

EnerNOC Joins Host in Ireland as a Partner for 2018

Host in Ireland Welcomes Peter Connolly, Regional Manager, Ireland of EnerNOC, to Its Executive Committee

DUBLIN – 28 February, 2018 – Host in Ireland, a strategic global initiative created to increase awareness of the benefits of hosting digital assets in Ireland, and winner of the Datacloud Europe 2016 award for Innovative Data Center Location, today announces that EnerNOC, an Enel Group company and a demand response and energy intelligence software provider, will be a strategic partner in 2018.  In addition, Peter Connolly, Regional Manager, Ireland of EnerNOC, will join the Host in Ireland Executive Committee.

“We’re excited to welcome EnerNOC as a Host in Ireland partner,” says Garry Connolly, Founder and President of Host in Ireland.  “Additionally, we extend a warm hand to Peter Connolly who joins our Executive Committee.  Peter's vast professional background and technical training in energy efficiency and management strategies will prove to be invaluable to the goals of the initiative.”

Ireland must continue to aggressively exploit its renewable energy resources, making strides towards a future of cleaner and more affordable power options with a commitment to 40 percent of its electrical energy from renewables by 2020.  As ‘Ireland’s Data Hosting Industry 2017’ report indicated, collaboration between renewable energy developers, data centre operators, and state utilities and agencies is essential to maintaining Ireland’s position as a global, Tier 1 location for hosting as the country’s digital sector enters its next phase of growth.

“We’ve joined Host in Ireland in 2018 because of our desire to learn from data centres, as some are among Ireland’s largest energy consumers,” states Peter Connolly, Regional Manager, Ireland of EnerNOC.  “We believe that the whole of Ireland’s data centres can and will offer the world a case study in thoughtful, proactive approaches to energy management solutions.  Naturally, with our caliber of global energy market expertise and experience, we also see an opportunity to be a thought-leader and partner in the planning and execution of strategic energy projects.”

EnerNOC, part of the Enel X division of the Enel Group, partners with industrial and commercial businesses to reduce costs, manage risks, increase sustainability, and maximise the value of emerging energy technologies through customised energy management strategies. In partnering with Host in Ireland, EnerNOC aims to help customers navigate the integration of Ireland’s electricity market with the rest of Europe, and connect customers with the new services that EirGrid, the state-owned electric power transmission operator in Ireland, is launching as part of its “Delivering a Secure Sustainable Electricity System” (DS3) programme.  It is EnerNOC’s position that Irish data centres can leverage these types of demand-side initiatives to build a positive rapport with the Irish electricity grid system.

As EnerNOC Regional Manager, Peter Connolly leads engagements with Irish industrial and commercial customers, helping them build competitive advantage and operational resilience through energy solutions that include demand response and distributed energy resources.

“As our group of active partners continues to grow this year, we are delighted to welcome Kirby Group Engineering to the Host in Ireland collective,” says Garry Connolly, Founder and President of Host in Ireland. “I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Mr. Flanagan, who will undoubtedly prove to be an immediate asset to our Executive Committee.”

The combination of Ireland’s pro-business approach, attractive corporate tax and legal system, renewable energy resources, and commitment to data centre energy efficiency make it uniquely attractive to global operators, including international pharmaceutical, biotech and software companies seeking an optimal location to host their digital assets. The result is that Ireland has evolved as a Tier 1 hosting location to become the ‘Digital Gateway to Europe’ and the ‘Home of the Hybrid Cloud’ as major multinational companies prioritise their online presence and aggressively launch digital-first initiatives.

“We are delighted to join Host in Ireland as a strategic partner,” states Mark Flanagan, Group Operations Director of Kirby Group Engineering. “Through this partnership, Kirby will play an active role in strengthening Ireland’s position as an optimum location for digital assets by sharing our in-depth knowledge and expertise in delivering high quality, efficient and resilient mission critical infrastructure.”

About Host in Ireland

Host in Ireland, winner of the Datacloud Europe 2016 award for Innovative Data Center Location, is an industry-led marketing initiative that provides timely and accurate information about Ireland’s digital asset hosting ecosystem at all times including demonstrating why Ireland is more cost-effective, efficient, reliable, secure and accessible than most other regions across the EU.  There's a reason companies like Microsoft, Zendesk, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Adobe and beyond have sought to host their solutions in as well as to/from Ireland.  Many of these reasons are immediately realized due to access to affordable power, redundant network and bandwidth capacity along with a variety of data center providers that offer an array of services sustained by the “5 Ps”: Policy, People, Pedigree, Pipes, and Power.  On top of that is a very attractive business management structure, implemented by Ireland, which is keenly interested to bring new businesses into the market.  Ireland supports this initiative through its pro-business approach, attractive corporate tax and fiscal structures, common law based legal system, continued investment in off-Island fiber cables to the U.S. and Europe, financial support for data centre energy efficiency, and access to a skilled native English-speaking workforce - ensuring data asset compliance for companies large and small.  For more information about Host in Ireland, visit www.hostinireland.com.
